Launched in the mid-1950s, BMG was part of RCA until it was acquired by Bertelsmann in 1987. BMG's Music Club is one of the biggest direct-to-customer distributors of music and has a large number of members across its various genre-based music clubs. In 2002 the club announced their all-time best sellers, honoring the top 100 selling albums with a special plaque.
