Before 1951 the Prime Minister of Canada had no official residence and they lived in a variety of structures around Ottawa:
- John A. Macdonald
- 1867-1870 - A now demolished house at 63 Daly Street in Sandy Hill
- 1872-1873 - A now demolished house 195 Chapel St. in Sandy Hill
- 1878-1883 - Stadacona Hall - now High Commission of Brunei, Ottawa
- 1883-1891 - Earnscliffe - now home of the British High Commissioner to Canada
- Alexander Mackenzie - A house in the area that is now the site of the Confederation Building
- John Abbott - ?; house likely in Ottawa and lived at Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue in Montreal after retiring
- John Thompson - A house at 237 Metcalfe; 3 other houses around Metcalfe and Lisgar from 1891–1894
- Mackenzie Bowell - ?; likely rented a dwelling in Ottawa
- Charles Tupper - ?; likely a rent house in Ottawa as he had spent most of his time before in rented houses or hotels
- Wilfrid Laurier - Laurier House
- Robert Borden - 201 Wurtemburg Street - likely site of apartment next to Turkish Embassy, Ottawa
- Arthur Meighen - A house at 21 Cooper Street (near McLaren Street and Driveway?)
- William Lyon Mackenzie King - Laurier House in Sandy Hill and Kingsmere in Quebec
- R.B. Bennett - A suite in the Chateau Laurier
- Louis St. Laurent
- 1948-1951 - An apartment in the Roxborough, today the site of Confederation Park
