Fairy Tail is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Hiro Mashima that has been adapted into an anime series by A-1 Pictures and Satelight.[1] The series follows the adventures of the seventeen-year-old celestial wizard Lucy Heartfilia, as she joins the titular guild and partners with Natsu Dragneel, who is searching for the dragon Igneel. In Japan, the series has been published by Kodansha in Weekly Shōnen Magazine since August 23, 2006 and in tankōbon format since December 15, 2006.[2] As of February 2012, the series spans over 250 chapters and 31 volumes.[3]

In the United States and Canada, the series was originally licensed for an English language release in North America by Del Rey Manga, which published the first volume of the series on March 25, 2008 and ended their license with Volume 12 on September 28, 2010.[4][5] Kodansha Comics USA and Random House took over distribution of the series beginning with Volume 13 on May 10, 2011,[6] reprinting the earlier 12 volumes under their name.[7] As of January 2012, 17 such volumes have been released.[8]

The 17-year-old celestial wizard Lucy Heartfilia wants to join the popular Fairy Tail wizard's guild despite their reputation for causing destruction. She bumps into Natsu Dragneel, a Dragon Slayer wizard who can control fire, and his cat Happy, both of whom are looking for the dragon Igneel. She also meets a man claiming to be a member of Fairy Tail named Salamander, who offers to let her join Fairy Tail. He turns out to be a criminal who tries to sell Lucy as a slave, but she is rescued by Natsu, who exposes "Salamander" as an imposter by revealing himself to be the real Salamander of Fairy Tail. After defeating the imposter, Natsu invites Lucy to join Fairy Tail, which she accepts. Shortly after becoming a member, she and Natsu learn that fellow Fairy Tail member Macao Conbolt has disappeared in the mountains and go on a mission to rescue him. They confront and defeat a monstrous Vulcan, which had possessed Macao.

Natsu, Lucy, and Happy accept a request to destroy a book entitled Daybreak for the son of the book's author, who called the book the worst he had ever written. Lucy discovers that the author was forced to write the book for its current owner, the corrupt Duke Everlue, during three years of solitary confinement. After defeating Everlue, Lucy returns the book to their client, revealing it to contain a secret message from his father apologizing for abandoning his family. Shortly after returning home, Natsu and ice wizard Gray Fullbuster are approached by Erza Scarlet, one of the strongest wizards in Fairy Tail, to help her stop the dark guild Eisenwald from using the cursed flute Lullaby to carry out an unknown assassination plot.

Fairy Tail discovers that Eisenwald plans to assassinate the guild masters in Fiore, including their own master, Makarov Dreyar. Natsu defeats Eisenwald's leader Erigor, while Makarov talks the last standing guild member Kageyama out of carrying out the plot. This awakens the demon sealed within Lullaby, though Natsu, Gray, and Erza destroy it. Shortly upon returning home, Natsu and Erza battle each other as part of a challenge they had made to each other before fighting Eisenwald. Their battle is interrupted by an emissary of the Magic Council, who arrests Erza for the damages caused during their battle against Eisenwald.

Natsu tries to save Erza, only to discover that her arrest was merely a farce so the Magic Council could display their authority over Fairy Tail. Still determined to prove his strength, Natsu steals a request for an S-Class quest together with Happy against Makarov's permission, persuading Lucy to join them. Gray is sent by Fairy Tail to stop the three, but ends up getting dragged into the mission as well. The request details that the four must lift a curse off of Galuna Island that transforms the islanders into demons when they are exposed to moonlight. While investigating the island, they discover a frozen demon that Gray recognizes as Deliora, which his teacher Ur had sacrificed herself for to seal away. They also learn that Gray's fellow former student, Lyon Vastia, has assembled a cult of wizards on the island so he may resurrect and defeat Deliora in an attempt to surpass the late Ur, blaming Gray for her death.

Lyon's henchmen destroy the islanders' village, but Natsu and Lucy defeat them before Erza arrives to return the four to the guild for punishment. However, she relents when Gray states his determination to stop Lyon no matter what. Meanwhile, Natsu sets off stop the ceremonial Moon Drip spell meant to resurrect Deliora, leading his friends to follow him. Along the way, Gray reveals his past to Lucy, Erza, and Happy—Gray was taken in by Ur after his hometown was destroyed by Deliora. He tried to take revenge against Deliora, but Ur sacrificed herself to protect him by casting the spell Iced Shell on the demon, which transformed her body into the ice freezing it. Though she remains alive in this form, she told Gray to tell Lyon that she had died, sparking Lyon's grudge against Gray.

Gray confronts Lyon with the truth of Ur's fate, but Lyon reveals that he had known Ur was alive all along and still intends to melt her body, which would "kill" her. Enraged, Gray defeats Lyon, but is unable to prevent Deliora's resurrection. However, Deliora is revealed to have already died while frozen. Even with Lyon defeated and Deliora dead, everyone realizes that they have yet to lift the island's curse. They return to the village to find that it has been repaired by Ultear Milkovich, Ur's daughter and a member of the Magic Council disguised as one of Lyon's henchmen. The islanders reason the curse can only be lifted by destroying the moon, so Natsu and Erza aim their attacks at the sky, destroying the true cause of the curse—a magical membrane that formed over the island as a side effect of the Moon Drip ceremony. Furthermore, it is revealed that the curse hadn't transformed the islanders into demons—rather, they had been demons all along, and the "curse" had affected their memories of it. The members of Fairy Tail return home to discover that their guild has been attacked by Gajeel Redfox, a Dragon Slayer and a member of the rival guild Phantom Lord, prompting Makarov to lead an attack against Phantom Lord. Meanwhile, Lucy is kidnapped by Juvia Lockser and Sol, two members of Phantom Lord's strongest team, Element 4.

Makarov is drained of his magical power by Aria of Element 4, forcing Fairy Tail to retreat. Lucy learns from Phantom Lord's master Jose Porla that the one who ordered for her kidnapping was her own father, a wealthy business tycoon. She is rescued by Natsu shortly after and returned to their guildhall, where she confesses to hiding her own wealthy heritage from her friends. Jose leads an attack against Fairy Tail with his own mobile fortress. Erza defends her guild by taking a blast from Phantom Lord's magic cannon Jupiter, gravely injuring her. Natsu, Gray, and Elfman Strauss infiltrate Phantom Lord's base and destroy the cannon's power source, defeating one of Element 4's members, Totomaru, in the process. In response, Jose transforms his fortress into a giant robotic wizard and prepares to cast the destructive Abyss Break spell. Mirajane tries to buy her guild time by offering herself to Phantom Lord while disguised as Lucy, having hidden the real Lucy away, but Jose sees through her disguise and tries to kill her. While searching for a means to stop the robot, Elfman battles with Sol and, upon seeing his sister in danger, defeats him using his Beast Soul transformation. Gray then battles Juvia, who falls in love with him.

Gray defeats Juvia while the newly recuperated Erza defeats Aria, stopping the casting of Abyss Break. However, Gajeel successfully kidnaps Lucy once again. Natsu battles Gajeel, but runs out of energy and is overwhelmed by Gajeel's Iron Dragon Slayer magic. However, after seeing his own damaged guildhall crumbling, and regaining his energy when Lucy summons her spirit Sagittarius to start a fire for him to eat, Natsu defeats Gajeel. Meanwhile, Jose steps into the battle to kill the members of Fairy Tail in his fortress himself. Before he can do so, Makarov, having regained his magical power, returns and battles Jose, casting the evil-destroying Fairy Law spell on him.

With Jose's defeat, the war between guilds ends and Phantom Lord is disbanded by the Magic Council. Feeling responsible for causing the war, Lucy returns to her father, with her friends fearing that she intends to leave the guild. Instead, Lucy cuts ties with her father for putting her guild in harm's way. Normalcy returns to Fairy Tail as its members begin to reconstruct their guildhall. However, Lucy notices that fellow member Loke is behaving strangely as he tries to distance himself from her. Lucy discovers that Loke is actually the celestial spirit Leo, who was banished from his realm as punishment for causing the death of his previous master, Karen Lilica, and will soon run out of energy in the human world and die. Desperate to save Loke, Lucy challenges the Celestial Spirit King and persuades him to reconsider Loke's exile as the events leading to Karen's death came from his desire to protect one of his fellow spirits, Aries, from their master's cruelty. Loke is thus allowed to return to his realm, becoming one of Lucy's contracted spirits as well.

As thanks for saving him, Loke invites Lucy and her friends to a paid vacation at a resort. They are joined by Juvia, who wants to join Fairy Tail. Their vacation is interrupted by the arrival of four of Erza's childhood friends, who accuse her of betraying them in the past. The four kidnap Erza and bring her to the Tower of Heaven, a construct built by Erza's former friend Jellal Fernandes (Happy is also taken by one of Erza's cat-loving friends). Natsu, Lucy, Gray, and Juvia go to the tower to find that Erza has already broken free, but Natsu goes deeper into the tower to find Happy. Erza reveals her past to her friends—as children, she, Jellal, and their friends were enslaved by a cult of evil wizards and forced to build the Tower of Heaven, which was intended to resurrect the ancient evil wizard Zeref. Erza led a revolt to free her fellow slaves, but Jellal was corrupted by a being claiming to be Zeref's spirit. Wishing to resurrect Zeref himself, Jellal betrayed Erza and continued the tower's construction, turning their friends against her and leaving her to escape on her own. Meanwhile, Siegrain, a member of the Magic Council who resembles Jellal, persuades the council to destroy the tower with their most powerful weapon, Etherion.

Erza, Lucy, Gray, and Juvia climb the tower in search of Natsu. They are joined by two of Erza's childhood friends—Simon, who reveals he had never turned on Erza, and Sho, who realizes that Jellal had tricked him after listening to Erza's story. After Natsu finds Happy and defeats Erza's two other friends, Wally Buchanan and Millianna, Jellal announces the council's decision to destroy the tower with Etherion, and challenges everyone to defeat him before the council's attack. They continue through the tower, battling and defeating three of Jellal's other minions, a trio of assassins called Trinity Raven.

Erza reaches the top of the tower and confronts Jellal, but fails to stop him before Etherion fires at the tower. However, the attack is instead absorbed by the crystalline lacrima inside the tower, sparing everyone inside. Jellal reveals that he (as Siegrain) had manipulated the Magic Council into providing the tower enough magical energy to resurrect Zeref. He tries to use Erza as a human sacrifice, but Natsu rescues her and battles Jellal. Jellal decides he no longer needs Erza and tries to kill both her and Natsu, but Simon arrives and defends them from Jellal's attack, killing him. Enraged at the sight of Erza crying over Simon's death, Natsu eats the Etherion-infused lacrima and achieves a higher form of Dragon Slayer magic called Dragon Force, which gives him enough power to defeat Jellal and destroy the tower. Erza merges herself with the lacrima to prevent it from exploding long enough for Natsu to escape, but Natsu manages to save her and they escape alive together.

Erza says farewell to her old friends, who leave to travel the world together. She and the other members of Fairy Tail return to find their guildhall renovated into a more extravagant building. They also discover that Juvia has become a member of Fairy Tail, as well as Gajeel, to everyone's chagrin. The guild prepares for their annually held Fantasia parade when Makarov's grandson, Laxus, declares his intention to take over the guild by force. He and his bodyguards, the Raijin Tribe, turn the females of Fairy Tail (including Lucy) to stone and force the rest of the guild to fight each other in an event he calls "the Battle of Fairy Tail". In addition, he traps everyone above the age of 80 inside the guildhall to keep the 88-year-old Makarov from interfering; mysteriously, the trap prevents Natsu from escaping as well.

Thanks to her magic-resistant artificial eye, Erza returns to normal from her petrified state and defeats Evergreen of the Raijin Tribe, turning the rest of the petrified girls to normal. In response, Laxus casts the Thunder Palace spell around Magnolia to destroy the entire city. Using her decoding expertise, Levy lifts the runic enchantment trapping Natsu and Gajeel inside the guildhall, though the stress of the situation causes Makarov to collapse. The masked Mystogan confronts Laxus in his hiding place within Kardia Cathedral and battles him to make him lift the Thunder Palace spell. Their battle attracts the attention of Natsu and Erza, who witness Laxus blasting off Mystogan's mask, revealing him to resemble Jellal. Erza goes out and persuades the rest of the guild, who remain bitter over their senseless fighting, to help her destroy the Thunder Palace. With the spell lifted, Natsu battles Laxus together with Gajeel, but find their attacks to be ineffective as Laxus reveals himself to be the Thunder Dragon Slayer. Frustrated with his plans' failure, Laxus casts Fairy Law to destroy the entire city at once. Makarov is brought back to full health thanks to the healing wizard Poluchka, and expels Laxus from Fairy Tail as punishment for his actions. During the Fantasia parade, he and the rest of the guild give him a send-off indicating that they will always look over him. Later, Lucy meets with her father, who reveals that he has lost his company and fortune. Lucy initially refuses to forgive him, but makes peace with him after fighting off a dark guild that takes his new workplace hostage. Oración Seis's leader Brain brings Wendy to their hideout and forces her to use her Sky Dragon Slayer magic to revive Jellal, Brain's former student, who has the ability to find and unseal Nirvana. Natsu arrives to rescue her and Happy, and brings Wendy to heal Erza, who was poisoned in their battle against Oración Seis. With the last of his strength, Brain leads the heroes into a trap that gravely injures Jura. Meanwhile, Erza defeats Midnight, the last remaining member of Oración Seis. This, however, awakens Brain's destructive alternate personality named Zero, who Brain had sealed away with a spell that could only be lifted with the six's defeat. Zero pilots Nirvana to destroy Cait Shelter. Fortunately, the members of Blue Pegasus and Lamia Scale attack Nirvana on board Blue Pegasus's damaged airship, the Christina, saving the guildhall. Hibiki relays the information to stop Nirvana by simultaneously destroying the lacrima crystals powering its legs. Natsu defeats Zero and destroys one of the lacrima crystals powering Nirvana at the same time as his friends do, destroying Nirvana. Jura and Hoteye regain consciousness and help Natsu, Wendy, and Jellal escape the collapsing Nirvana with their friends. Shortly after, troops from the Magic Council arrive to arrest Jellal together with Hoteye and the surviving members of Oración Seis. Natsu and his friends protest Jellal's arrest, but Erza respects Jellal's decision to go with the Magic Council and pay for his crimes. The next day, the grateful members of Cait Shelter reveal themselves to be an illusion created by its master Roubaul for the sole purpose of caring for Wendy after Jellal placed her in his care. Furthermore, Roubaul explains he is a spirit from the ancient tribe that created Nirvana, which he wished to destroy to atone for creating such a dangerous weapon. With the alliance's mission complete, the Cait Shelter guild fades away, leaving Wendy to join Fairy Tail. While adjusting to life at her new guild, Wendy meets Mystogan and realizes he is the Jellal she had befriended years ago. Mystogan warns Wendy of Magnolia's imminent destruction by a portal in the sky called Anima, which subsequently sucks the entire city through it, though Natsu, Wendy, Happy, and Carla survive. Natsu, Wendy, Happy, and Carla learn that the Fairy Tail guild in Edolas is being hunted by the army of the Edolas Kingdom, one of its commanders being an evil counterpart of Erza named Erza Knightwalker. They also learn that the king of Edolas, Faust, is using the Anima portals to absorb magic and wizards from Earthland and transform it into lacrima with which to replenish Edolas's dwindling magic resources. In addition, the four find that they are incapable of using their magic in Edolas. Wishing to bestow eternal magic to Edolas by colliding Extalia with the giant lacrima containing the residents of Earthland, Faust rebels against the Exceeds by transforming the Exceed army chasing Happy and Carla into a giant lacrima crystal. Lucy, Happy, and Carla are nearly captured by Knightwalker, but are rescued by Gray and Erza Scarlet, who have been returned to normal by Gajeel through the use of his Dragon Slayer magic. Scarlet clashes with Knightwalker while Gray rescues Natsu and Wendy, who have been drained of their magic by Faust to power a weapon with which to carry out his plan, and gives them medicine that allows them to use their magic again. Wendy and Carla go to Extalia to alert the Exceeds of Faust's plan, but the Exceeds are overconfident in their superiority over humans and refuse to listen. As the giant lacrima prepares to collide with Extalia, Chagot appears before Wendy, Carla, and her people and confesses that the Exceeds' supposed divinity had been an act to hide their true, weak nature. Chagot offers Carla the chance to kill her as atonement for the mission to kill Dragon Slayers, but Carla instead inspires the Exceeds to help her friends push the giant lacrima away from Extalia. As they do, Mystogan—revealed to be the prince of Edolas and Faust's son—appears and sends the lacrima through an Anima portal, ensuring that everyone trapped inside it will return to normal. Suddenly, the Edolas army appears, headed by Faust piloting a mechanical dragon-shaped robot, to turn the Exceeds into lacrima. In the ensuing battle, Natsu, Gajeel, and Wendy defeat Faust while Scarlet defeats Knightwalker and Lucy and Gray defend the Exceeds, aided by the Fairy Tail guild from Edolas. The reversed Anima causes all the Earthland wizards and the Exceeds to return to Earthland, where they find Magnolia restored and its residents without any memory of being sucked through the portal. Chagot explains to Carla that there never was any mission to hunt Dragon Slayers in the first place—the queen had foreseen Edolas's destruction and sent one hundred Exceed eggs, including Happy and Carla's, to Earthland for protection, and Carla had merely foreseen future events with her own precognative powers. Chagot leaves with the other Exceeds to search for their missing children, deciding not to tell Carla that she is her mother. Cana finds Mavis's grave and reflects on her reasons for becoming an S-Class wizard—her father is revealed to be Gildarts, who is unaware of his relationship with her, leading Cana to decide to become an S-Class wizard and bolster her own confidence to reveal the truth to him. However, she becomes wracked with guilt over abandoning Lucy and returns to her to find her, Natsu, and Wendy being attacked by Grimoire Heart's second-in-command, Bluenote Stinger. Cana tries to defeat Bluenote using the Fairy Glitter spell given to her by Mavis's spirit, but fails. Gildarts arrives to battle Bluenote, as do Fried and Bickslow to help Levy and Lisanna fight Rustyrose. However, Azuma destroys the massive tree on Tenrou Island that increases the strength of all the Fairy Tail wizards on the island, thereby weakening them until Erza defeats Azuma and restores some of the tree's magic, allowing the others to defeat their respective opponents. Meanwhile, Gray meets Ultear, who tries tricking him into defeating Hades and killing himself using Iced Shell so she can keep Zeref for herself. Gray is unfooled by Ultear's deception and battles her instead.

Ultear reveals her plan to use Zeref's power to go back in time and kill her mother Ur out of revenge for seemingly being abandoned and replaced by her as a child. During their fight, Gray and Ultear fall into the ocean where Ur's frozen body had melted, allowing Ultear to experience her mother's memories and realize she was never abandoned. Gray and Erza regroup with Natsu, Lucy, and Wendy, who attack Hades. Despite battling at full strength and being assisted by the return of Laxus, Hades's power continues to increase to the point where he becomes invincible. During their search for the power source of Hades's airship to destroy it, however, Happy, Carla, and Panther Lily instead find and destroy the machine giving Hades his magic power. With Hades weakened and the destroyed Tenrou Tree restored by a repentant Ultear, the Fairy Tail wizards defeat Hades.

Makarov allows Hades to leave the island alive, but Hades is killed inside his airship by Zeref. Ultear attempts suicide by drowning herself out of guilt for her past actions, but Meldy rescues her and they decide to live together. On the island, the members of Fairy Tail celebrate their victory against Grimoire Heart while Makarov suspends the S-Class trial and Cana reveals to Gildarts their relationship. As a result of Grimoire Heart's attempts to capture Zeref, however, the dragon Acnologia appears and seemingly destroys Tenrou Island. Seven years later, the rest of the Fairy Tail guild has fallen into disrepair, becoming the weakest guild in Fiore. However, the missing members return, having been protected by the Fairy Sphere spell cast by Mavis's spirit. The guild celebrates their return while Lucy discovers that her father has died, but finds herself fully at peace with him upon finding seven years worth of gifts from him, proving that he truly loved her.

The returning Fairy Tail members discover that, despite being part of the weakest guild in Fiore, their friends have become more powerful than them. They decide to participate in the Grand Magic Games, an annually held tournament that determines the rank of Fiore's strongest guild, which now belongs to Sabertooth, a guild that includes Dragon Slayers Sting Eucliffe and Rogue Cheney. The returning members plan to spend the next three months training for the tournament, but Natsu and his friends waste most of their time celebrating their return with Lucy's celestial spirits for a day in the celestial world, which lasts three months in their own world. Soon after, they reunite with the runaway Jellal, Ultear, and Meldy, who have formed their own guild called Crime Sorcière and double their own magic power in exchange for their help in determining the source of a magic anomaly they have sensed around the tournament arena. Natsu, Lucy, Gray, Erza, and Wendy form their guild's team for the tournament, but Wendy goes missing before the preliminary event designed to narrow the tournament down to eight teams. With Elfman replacing Wendy, the five barely pass the preliminary in last place.
