The Fifty Fifth Parliament of the United Kingdom is the current legislature of the United Kingdom following the 2010 general election of Members of Parliament to the House of Commons. Parliament, which consists of the House of Lords and the elected House of Commons, was convened by Queen Elizabeth II, as monarch on 25 May 2010 at the Palace of Westminster and its dissolution is set to be on 13 April 2015, being 17 working days ahead of the 2015 general election on 7 May 2015.

Following the results, 650 Members of Parliament were elected to the House of Commons, with the Conservative Party led by David Cameron gaining most of the votes, however failing to gain a majority resulting in a hung parliament. A coalition government was formed following negotiations with Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg. John Bercow resumed his role as Speaker of the House of Commons. In September 2010, Ed Miliband after a vote of Labour Party leadership replaced Gordon Brown as leader of the opposition.

In the House of Lords, Baroness Hayman (ex-Labour) resumed her role as Lord Speaker until the end of her five year term in 2011 after which she did not seek re-election in the house. Peers elected Baroness D'Souza (ex-Crossbench) to replace her. From the start of this Parliament the Lords were "led" by Lord Strathclyde without an absolute majority on his Conservative benches. In January 2013 he stood down and was succeeded by Lord Hill of Oareford.

Deputy Speakers

• Lindsay Hoyle (Lab) was elected Chairman of Ways and Means, Nigel Evans (Con) was elected First Deputy Chairman of Ways and Means and Dawn Primarolo (Lab) was elected Second Deputy Chairman of Ways and Means. Although these Deputy Speakers do not resign from their parties, they cease to vote (except to break ties) and do not participate in party-political activity until the next election.

By-elections

• Eric Illsley (Ind, Barnsley Central), formerly of the Labour Party, resigned his on 8 February 2011, shortly before receiving a prison sentence for his part in the United Kingdom parliamentary expenses scandal. On 3 March 2011, Dan Jarvis (Lab) won the by-election.
• Denis MacShane (Lab, Rotherham) resigned on 2 November 2012, following a parliamentary inquiry into his falsification of expenses claims. On 29 November 2012, Sarah Champion (Lab) won the resulting by-election
• Phil Woolas's (Lab, Oldham East and Saddleworth) result was ruled void on 5 November 2010 causing a by-election which he did not fight, hampered by accusations of involvement in the false statements of fact, about the personal character of the LD candidate, in 2010 campaign literature. On 13 January 2011, Debbie Abrahams (Lab) won the by-election.
• Gerry Adams chose to resign his Belfast West seat in January 2011 to contest Louth in the Irish general election which he won, while keeping his role as the head of the Irish party. On 9 June 2011 Paul Maskey (Sinn Féin) won the by-election.
• David Cairns (Lab, Inverclyde) died of acute pancreatitis on 9 May 2011. On 30 June, Iain McKenzie (Lab) won the by-election.
• Alan Keen (Lab, Feltham and Heston) died on 10 November 2011. On 15 December 2011, Seema Malhotra (Lab) won the by-election.
• Marsha Singh (Lab, Bradford West) retired due to ill health on 2 March 2012. On 29 March 2012, George Galloway (Respect) won the by-election.
• Alun Michael (Lab, Cardiff South and Penarth) and Tony Lloyd (Lab, Manchester Central) stood down to run as the Labour candidates for Police and Crime Commissioner in Wales and Greater Manchester, respectively. Stephen Doughty (Lab) won the Cardiff South and Penarth by-election. Lucy Powell (Lab) won the Manchester Central by-election. Both occurred on 15 November 2012.
• Louise Mensch (Con, Corby) chose to retire to move to the USA whose husband took up work there. On 15 November 2012, Andy Sawford (Lab) won the by-election.
• Malcolm Wicks (Lab, Croydon North died in October 2012. On 29 November 2012, Steve Reed (Lab) won the by-election.
• Sir Stuart Bell (Lab, Middlesbrough) died of cancer on 13 October 2012. A by-election took place on 29 November 2012, at which Andy McDonald was elected as the new Labour Member of Parliament for Middlesbrough.
• Tony Lloyd (Lab, Manchester Central) resigned to contest the Police and Crime Commissioner elections on 22 October 2012. On 15 November 2012, Lucy Powell (Lab) won the by-election.
• Alun Michael (Lab, Cardiff South and Penarth) resigned to contest the Police and Crime Commissioner elections on 22 October 2012. On 15 November 2012, Stephen Doughty (Lab) won the by-election.
• Martin McGuinness (SF, Mid-Ulster) resigned on 2 January 2013, citing his party's commitment to end double jobbing. A by-election took place on 7 March 2013, at which Francie Molloy was elected as the new Sinn Féin Member of Parliament.
• Chris Huhne (LD, Eastleigh) admitted perverting the course of justice on 4 February 2012. On 28 February 2013, Mike Thornton (LD) won the by-election.
• David Miliband (Lab, South Shields) resigned his seat on 15 April 2013 after being appointed head of the New York based International Rescue Committee. On 2 May 2013 Emma Lewell-Buck (Lab) won the by-election.

Defections, Suspensions, Removal of whip

• Eric Illsley (Lab, Barnsley Central) had the Labour whip withdrawn on 19 May 2010 after he was charged with false accounting as part of the United Kingdom Parliamentary expenses scandal.
• Denis MacShane (Lab, Rotherham) was suspended from the party and had the whip withdrawn from 14 October 2010-4 July 2012 after the Metropolitan Police began an investigation into his conduct following a referral from the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards. He now sits as an independent.]
• Nadine Dorries (Con, Mid Bedfordshire was suspended from the Conservative Party from 6 November 2012 to 8 May 2013. She was suspended due to her unauthorized participation in the television programme I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!.
