List of New York metropolitan area sports teams
This is a list of professional sports teams based in and around New York City. With a population topping 20 million, the New York metropolitan area is the largest in the United States and the third largest in the world, and many teams—including a number of "major league" franchises—are based beyond the city limits but are nonetheless considered New York City teams, hence the inclusion of teams outside the five boroughs. The National Football League's New York Giants and New York Jets, for example, both compete in New Jersey, but retain the New York nickname. Even teams that do not have the New York nickname but are based in the metro area, such as the New Jersey Nets and the New Jersey Devils, receive equal coverage in the New York City media.
