This is a list of Presidents of the United Republic of Tanzania. The United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar was formed 26 April 1964 from the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar; Julius Nyerere was its first president. On 1 November 1964, the country's name was changed to Tanzania.
