  • Exploris Middle School is a charter school founded in 1997 and located in downtown Raleigh, serving students in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. The Exploris curriculum is interdisciplinary and theme-based. Teachers design each theme based on a combination of North Carolina's Standard Course of Study, global issues, student questions, and community connections. Because of the school's location, Exploris students become familiar with the vast resources of Raleigh and its surrounding communities, including museums, State government, universities, the performing arts, and local businesses. Community partnerships and culminating theme projects are central to Exploris' adolescent centered globally focused curriculum. More information at http://www.explorismiddleschool.org/

  • Ligon Middle School is a magnet middle school. It boasts a large number of elective choices, about 100–200 choices, and has an AG program. Ligon is located in downtown Raleigh on Lenior Street. It has a soccer field, football field, but no track as there is limited space in downtown Raleigh. The 6th, 7th, and 8th grade halls hallways are relatively close with the electives divided into areas. There is an Arts Wing for visual and musical art, computer labs located in a group, a gym that is divided up into sections for different electives, and trailers outside for foreign languages. Some electives are chess, orchestra, surf the net, flag football, pottery, band, dance, Spanish, French, Chinese, etc. Ligon is able to boast one of the few exploring technology electives in Wake County where students are able to use a wide variety of tools to do anything from making wooden race cars to learn to develop photographs. Electives are used primarily in Ligon's emphasis that arts and academics will result in notable achievements. For more information go to http://ligon.wcpss.net/
