Rihanna is a Barbadian recording artist who has recorded material for her six studio albums and has collaborated with other artists for duets and featured songs on their respective albums and charity singles. After signing a six album record contract with Def Jam Recordings in February 2005,[1] Rihanna began to work with producers Carl Sturken and Evan Rogers, who co-wrote and co-produced 12 out of 15 songs included on her 2005 debut album Music of the Sun.[2] Award winning songwriter Diane Warren co-wrote the title track,[2][3] while Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Deniece Williams co-wrote the song "Willing to Wait".[4] Sturken and Rogers continued to play an important role in the formation of Rihanna's 2006 album A Girl like Me. The production duo co-wrote and co-produced 9 songs out of 16.[5] The album's lead single, "SOS", was written by Evan "Kidd" Bogart and J. R. Rotem.[5] It contains a sped up sample of "Tainted Love",[6] which was originally written by Ed Cobb in 1965, for which Cobb was credited as a co-writer.[7]

Rihanna's third studio album, Good Girl Gone Bad, included a combination of songwriters and producers whom she had previously collaborated with as well as some new additions. Sturken and Rogers were less involved with the project than they were on Music of the Sun and A Girl like Me, co-writing and co-producing 2 songs out of 13.[8] Different writers and producers, including Christopher Stewart, Timbaland and Norwegian production team Stargate (Tor Erik Hermansen and Mikkel S. Eriksen) significantly contributed to the album, writing and producing a total of nine songs between them.[8] "Don't Stop the Music", the third single to be released from Good Girl Gone Bad, contains a sample of Michael Jackson's "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'", for which Jackson was credited as a co-writer.[8] The re-release of the album, Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded, featured new songs written by former boyfriend Chris Brown and Maroon 5.[8] Rated R, Rihanna's fourth studio effort, presented a new creative direction for the singer.[9] Shaffer Smith, Stewart, Hermansen and Eriksen produced tracks for the album, as well as Chase & Status and Justin Timberlake.[10] The lyrical content cast an ominous, dark and foreboding tone over Rated R, which critics noted as a step away from her more care-free persona from past albums.[11]

Rihanna's fifth studio album, Loud, saw the singer return to her dancehall roots.[12] Stargate penned three tracks for the album, including "Only Girl (In the World)", "What's My Name?" and "S&M". Fellow Barbadian singer-songwriter Shontelle co-wrote the reggae infused song "Man Down".[13][14] The singer's sixth studio album in as many years, Talk That Talk, incorporated predominantly dance-pop songs. Tracks were produced by Calvin Harris, Dr. Luke and Stargate.[15] The album's lead single, "We Found Love" was written and produced solely by Harris.[15]
