Mike O'Donnell and Junior Campbell wrote songs for the Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends TV series from 1994 until 2003, Season 3-7. These songs were not released on TV, instead they were released on audio cassettes or on Videos and DVDs, as music videos. Until Season 6, many of the songs were based on individual characters' theme tunes which they had composed and were used as incidental music.
In the UK, the first nine songs were released on an audio cassette in 1993, which was produced by EMI. The cassette featured a storyline about a competition for the 'Best Kept Station'. During parts of the story, each song was played as an intermission, similar to the 30-minute shows from 2004 and onwards. The tape which was Told by Michael Angelis was called, 'Thomas and the Best Kept Station Competition'. The Songs, 'That's What Friends Are For' and 'Rules & Regulations', which were two of the songs featured on the video, DVD, CD or cassette tape, though unlike every other song created for the series.
The Songs created for Series 6 and 7 have not yet been released in the UK or Australia, aside from 'Winter Wonderland', as a music video. However, a promotional DVD which became available for a very limited time only at Woolworths contained three of the Season 7 Songs, 'Five New Engines in the Shed', 'The Red Balloon' and 'Troublesome Trucks', which were previously only available in the UK by import from the USA or Singapore. The Promotional DVD was eventually re-released for a limited time by The Sunday Mirror, on June 10, 2007.
Since Season 8, the songs have been composed and written by Ed Welch, while Robert Hartshorne took over to compose the show's incidental music and the eighth season song "Engine Roll Call" is the current theme song of the series.
