The following is an episode list for the hit ITV crime drama Trial & Retribution. The series premiered on 19 October 1997, the show is written by Lynda La Plante , who is also famous for Prime Suspect and Widows (TV series). Each episode of Trial & Retribution is broadcast over 2 nights.

A five-year-old girl goes missing and the police are called in to search. When her body is found inside a sewage pipe, it becomes a murder investigation, which is headed by Detective Superintendent Michael Walker. They follow a few leads and eventually arrest a suspect, who is then sent to trial.

When Susan Harrow does not come home, after a night out, her mother reports her missing to the police. Her body is later discovered on waste land and a murder investigation is launched, once again headed by Det. Supt. Walker. There is later a second murder and they know that they have a serial killer on their hands.

A fifteen year old girl goes missing and her blood-stained clothes are found. Det. Supt. Walker heads the investigation into her murder. Meanwhile, D.I. North is sent to see a persistent complainer, Warrington, who has been hounding the station. North begins to get stalked by Warrington and Walker has a prime suspect for the murder. But then they find a connection between Warrington and Walker's prime suspect.

D.I. North re-investigates an eight-year-old murder case involving 2 Homosexuals and finds that Det. Supt. Walker was in charge of the inquiry. She begins to suspect that he's covering something up and he is suspended from duty. He returns to his roots to find new evidence to prove his innocence, in order to save his career, relationship and reputation.

A severed female hand is found in the Thames, which brings Detective Chief Inspector Róisín Conner in contact with Chief Superintendent Walker, who is now back in uniform after being found innocent at his murder trial. No body is found, and the case soon becomes a battle of wits against the killer, who has cleverly planned for every outcome in a bid to escape justice for his crime.

A young prostitute, Angela Dutton, plunges to her death from the eleventh floor balcony of a block of flats. The police begin a murder enquiry and discover that she was the daughter of a seventies TV star who was also found murdered twelve years earlier, wrapped in blue eiderdown. The killer was never found. D.C.S. Walker heads the investigation into the two murders, with the help of D.C.I. Connor and the rest of the team. They investigate to find out why Angela Dutton died - did she find her mother's killer, or did one of her three high-paying clients kill her?.

However, a strange man is noticed on CCTV who arouses suspicions.

The apparently happy Harrogate family is torn apart when they return home to discover their pad, Emily, dead. Connor appeals to Walker for some backup, who is having problems of his own with his own son Richard. Secrets are soon discovered and fragile relationships are tested in the process of ensuring justice is done.

Connor is suspicious of the identical twin sons in particular and suspects that they may have worked together in order to get away with patricide.

A suitcase is found abandoned at Heathrow Airport, and panic ensues, but it is soon discovered to be no terrorist threat. Inside is the naked body of Sofia Petrenko, a high-class prostitute, who has been strangled to death. The suitcase is traced to Vitali Malikov, a Ukrainian billionaire who admits to hiring Sofia's services, but he claims she was alive when she left him and that the case was a gift. D.C.S. Walker arrests Malikov on suspicion of murder, but later has to release him, and soon realises he has become a pawn in a much bigger game.

A well-known paediatric surgeon, Jonathan Carlisle, is found dead, and D.C.I. Connor uncovers a conflict stirred up following a recent operation which resulted in a young girl's death. The Team soon discover the girl's father, Gary Webster, was the subject of a restraining order issued by Carlisle, and that he had been stalking him for months. Webster disappears before he can be questioned, a game of cat and mouse ensuing, and he is eventually cornered, but that leads to further complications.

Terry Dyer has been recently released from prison, where he was imprisoned for a crime he still maintains he did not commit, and he returns to his East London estate in search of the truth. The father of the victim he was convicted of killing, Ken Randle, confronts and wounds him. D.C.S. Walker is empathetic to Ken's situation and releases him on bail, and then Ken soon becomes doubtful of Dyer's guilt, growing convinced that a friend of his son's was involved in his murder, and soon long-buried secrets are unearthed, leading to an unexpected twist, while D.S. Satchell finds his career may be in danger.

D.C.S. Walker goes on leave back to Glasgow, where he is taking care of his increasingly senile mother, he soon becomes involved in the case of a missing woman, who is the sister of an old friend. Walker begins to delve into the life of her then husband Kevin Reid, and discovers a dark bond between him and his brother Ronnie. Soon a body is discovered and is it is proved to be the missing woman. Then Kevin's second wife is reported missing - convincing Walker that one or both of the Reid brothers are involved in the crimes.

The body of a teenage girl, Maria Cole, is discovered in a chalk pit, and the tracks of three different vehicles are discovered at the crime scene. They eventually lead D.C.I. Connor and D.C.S. Walker to the local hardman, Ray Harper. His son Andy and his friend Darren admit being at the pit on the same night, though they claim that they never saw the girl there. However, cracks soon appear in their story when CCTV footage reveals that they crossed paths with Maria before her death, later leading to the two boys being charged with her murder.

An ambulance is run off the road (killing a paramedic) and the patient being transported inside is shot in the head resulting in his murder. The victim is revealed to be Sebastian Cole, and the media interest is high as he was engaged to Imogen Buller-Turi, who was a favourite with the tabloids, prompting Walker to intrude on Connor's investigation as it becomes clear that the murder is not a simple case of road rage, which leads Connor to reluctantly accept an alliance she would rather not commit to.

A young girl falls from a ferris wheel to her death at the local fair, which is initially thought to be nothing more than a tragic accident. But then Satchell's aunt, who is a fortune teller at the fair, approaches the team saying she believes there is more to it. The number of accidents at the fair begins to rise. Before long a second death occurs, and her suspicions seem justified, leading the team into a murder inquiry.

A shop manager is shot during a jewellery raid, and an accomplice to the killers turns informer, revealing the culprits to be a notorious crime family - but then the informant is himself shot dead. DS Satchell witnesses the crime, and soon finds that his life and that of his family are in danger, but can find no safety from the influence of the crime family who wish to keep him silent. When his wife and daughter go missing, he becomes desperate, and Walker and Connor race to find the evidence to bring down the family before he takes the law into his own hands.
