Medieval history refers to the period of Western European history known as the Middle Ages, which lasted from the 5th century (when the Roman Empire was divided into the Western Roman Empire and the Eastern Roman Empire) until the 16th century (during the Protestant Reformation and during the early stage of the dispersal of Europeans worldwide via overseas exploration).

Periods in the history of non-European areas, particularly China and Japan, are also colloquially referred to as 'medieval'.
