List of biggest box office bombs
This is a partial list of the biggest box office bombs. The films in this list generated the largest box office losses of all time.
Losses have been estimated from the revenues returned from box office sales worldwide subtracting the total costs of the movie including production, marketing, and distribution costs, although many studios do not provide official marketing costs. Other sales such as DVD sales and alternative revenues such as fees for product placement and licensing, are not taken into account. The list is sorted according to losses measured in 2012 US dollars (losses are inflated with the CPI from the year of release).

[edit] Statistics
The studio that owns distribution rights on films with the most total inflation adjusted losses enclosed in this list, is Warner Bros. Around 24% of the total losses in the list were from movies distributed by Warner Bros. In the second position of total inflation adjusted losses is Columbia Pictures with around 10% share, followed by Paramount Pictures (10%), Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (9%), Universal Studios (8%), 20th Century Fox (7%), Touchstone Pictures (6%), Walt Disney Pictures (4%), TriStar Pictures (3%), New Line Cinema (3%), Hollywood Pictures (2%), Freestyle Releasing (2%) and The Weinstein Company/Dimension Films (2%) are in the last positions followed by other smaller studios (10%) with even less distribution and production share in total losses.
Broken down along 2012 corporate lines, the corresponding shares are: Warner Bros. Entertainment (Warner Bros. + New Line Cinema) 27%, Sony Pictures Entertainment (Columbia Pictures + TriStar Pictures) 13%, MGM (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer + United Artists + Orion Pictures + The Samuel Goldwyn Company + American International Pictures + Filmways) 13%, Walt Disney Motion Pictures Group (Walt Disney Pictures + Touchstone Pictures + Hollywood Pictures) 12%, Paramount Motion Pictures Group 10%, NBC Universal (Universal Studios) 8%, Fox Entertainment Group (20th Century Fox) 7%, Freestyle Releasing 2%, The Weinstein Company/Dimension Films 2% other 6%.
Action, Comedy, Drama and Science Fiction films dominate the losses in the list. Around 24% of the total inflation adjusted losses were generated by Action movies while the corresponding percentage for Comedy, Drama and Science Fiction films is 26%, 24% and 20% respectively. Film genres contributing lower total losses include: Adventure films (14%), Fantasy films (11%), Historical films (9%), Thriller films (8%), Animated films (7%), War films (4%), Romantic Comedies (4%), Musicals (3%), Horror films (3%), Crime films (2%), Westerns (2%). The sum of those percentages exceeds 100% because a film may fall into more than one category (for example, the losses of an action-comedy film would contribute to the total losses from both genres). Films that do not belong to any of the genres mentioned above, like pure Biographical movies, all together generated no more than 1% of the total inflation adjusted losses of this list.
43% of inflation-adjusted losses in this list occurred during the decade 2000-2009. 2002 and 1999 are the years where most losses can be found, around 9% of the total included in the list for each, followed by the year 2001 where the corresponding rate is 8%.
Eddie Murphy is the actor with the biggest contribution in film losses, starring in 5 different bombs on this list, having total inflation adjusted losses of around $340 million. Bruce Willis, Donald Sutherland and Antonio Banderas follow with around $320M, $280M and $270M of total losses respectively. Other actors with significant contribution in film losses include Warren Beatty, Joan Cusack, Owen Wilson, Matthew McConaughey, John Travolta, Christian Slater, Val Kilmer, Kevin Costner, Dennis Quaid, Christopher Walken, Bill Murray, Goldie Hawn, Steve Martin, Dustin Hoffman, Sylvester Stallone, Tom Sizemore, Robert Duvall, Melanie Griffith, Liam Neeson, Ben Kingsley, Bob Hoskins, Nicolas Cage, James Woods, Robin Williams, Anthony Hopkins, Kris Kristofferson, Tim Robbins, Geena Davis, Al Pacino, Christopher Plummer, Penelope Cruz, Brendan Fraser, Frank Langella, Kurt Russell, Kelly Preston, Jason Alexander, Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone, Nastassja Kinski, Morgan Freeman, Jeremy Irons, Rene Russo, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Colin Farrell, Gene Hackman and more.
