This is a non-exhaustive list of the world's largest cities in terms of the surface area of their municipalities. This list is limited to clear, unambiguously defined political jurisdictions which (in their own language) identify themselves as cities. This is as opposed to a metropolitan area which may include multiple cities all under the jurisdiction of separate city councils. All of the cities on this list consist mostly of agricultural land, forests, or wilderness, and most of them are rather modest in terms of population. Chongqing is by far the most populous, but even it has more countryside than built-up areas within its boundaries.
