List of current National Basketball Association head coaches
The National Basketball Association (NBA) is a major professional basketball league in North America. The league was founded in 1946 as the Basketball Association of America (BAA).[1] The league adopted its current name at the start of the 1949–1950 season when it merged with the National Basketball League (NBL).[2] The league consists of 30 teams, of which 29 are located in the United States and one in Canada. In the NBA, a head coach is the highest ranking coach of a coaching staff. Head coaches typically hold a more public profile and are paid more than the assistant coaches. The list includes the date of hiring and the performance record of each coach.
Gregg Popovich has served as the San Antonio Spurs head coach for more than 16 seasons, longer than any other current head coach. Popovich has also coached the most games (1,328), won the most games (905), and lost the most games (423) among active coaches with their current team. None of the other active coaches has served more than nine seasons for his current team. Denver Nuggets head coach George Karl is the most experienced head coach. He has been the head coach of five different teams during his 25-season head coaching career. He has coached the most games (1,887), won the most games (1,131) and lost the most games (756) among active coaches in their entire coaching careers. None of the active head coaches have been inducted to the Basketball Hall of Fame as a coach.[3]
All active coaches are American. Twelve coaches have spent their entire head coaching careers with their current teams: Larry Drew with the Atlanta Hawks, Tom Thibodeau with the Chicago Bulls, Mark Jackson with the Golden State Warriors, Frank Vogel with the Indiana Pacers, Lionel Hollins with the Vancouver/Memphis Grizzlies, Erik Spoelstra with the Miami Heat, Monty Williams with the New Orleans Hornets/Pelicans, Scott Brooks with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Jacque Vaughn with the Orlando Magic, Lindsey Hunter with the Phoenix Suns, Gregg Popovich with the San Antonio Spurs, and Tyrone Corbin with the Utah Jazz.
At the start of the 2012–13 season, three teams began the season with new head coaches. The three new head coaches are Mike Dunlap (Charlotte Bobcats), Jacque Vaughn (Orlando Magic) and Terry Stotts (Portland Trail Blazers). During the season, four head coaches were replaced; the Los Angeles Lakers fired Mike Brown and replaced him with Mike D'Antoni, the Brooklyn Nets fired Avery Johnson and replaced him with P. J. Carlesimo, the Milwaukee Bucks fired Scott Skiles and replaced him with Jim Boylan, and the Phoenix Suns fired Alvin Gentry and replaced him with Lindsey Hunter.
At the end of the 2012–13 regular season, four teams announced that their current head coach would not be returning for the 2013–14 season; the Charlotte Bobcats fired Mike Dunlap,[4] the Cleveland Cavaliers fired Byron Scott and replaced him with Mike Brown,[5] the Detroit Pistons fired Lawrence Frank,[6] and Philadelphia 76ers head coach Doug Collins resigned.[7] After the Brooklyn Nets and the Milwaukee Bucks were eliminated from the playoffs, they announced that their current interim head coach, P. J. Carlesimo and Jim Boylan, would not be offered a new contract.[8][9]
