This is a list of the most widely spoken languages in the world sorted by the number of countries in which the language is spoken. A language has been deemed to be spoken in a country if it is the official language of that country or is spoken natively as a first language by a majority of that country's inhabitants.

  1. ^ Spanish is spoken by about 12.5% of US population (roughly 40 million) as first language and 6-10 million learning or speaking it as a second language, making a total of 46–50 million which makes US the 2nd or 3rd largest Spanish-speaking nation in the world. Please note that this figure is more than the total number of Spanish speakers in the Eastern Hemisphere. Even though Spanish is neither an official language in US (core), official in US territory of Puerto Rico, nor a majority spoken language, but Spanish speakers in USA account for significant number of Spanish speakers, so the US has been included in this list.
