The list of most expensive association football transfers details the 100 highest transfer fees ever paid for players.

The list contains seven transfers which broke the world transfer record: those of Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane, Luís Figo, Hernán Crespo, Christian Vieri, and Denílson all broke the record, with former five signing for Spanish clubs and the latter two signing for Italian clubs. The list also features a further 15 players who, at the time of the transfer, broke the national record for the club they were signing for: Ángel Di María, Edinson Cavani, Radamel Falcao, Fernando Torres, Carlos Tevez, Hulk, Rio Ferdinand, Thiago Silva, Juan Sebastián Verón, Robinho, Javier Pastore, Javi Martínez, Mario Gomez and Nicolas Anelka. Two of the top 100 became the most expensive teenager in history upon their transfer: Wayne Rooney and Luke Shaw both broke the record when they signed for English club Manchester United.

Since 2000, Spanish team Real Madrid have always held the record for purchasing the most expensive player when Luís Figo made a controversial £37m move from Barcelona to rivals Real Madrid.[1][2] Since then, the only player purchases to break the record have been Zinedine Zidane in 2001, when he was signed for £46m from Juventus,[1] the £80m transfer of Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United in 2009,[1] and Gareth Bale in 2013, who became the first player to cost €100m when he transferred from Tottenham Hotspur.

Notes[edit]

1. ^ Ibrahimović was transferred in a part-exchange deal worth €46 million, plus the rights to Samuel Eto'o (valued at €20m by Barcelona), and a single season loan of Alexander Hleb. Since Hleb refused to move to Inter, Barcelona had to pay a reported extra €3m to complete Ibrahimović's switch. The combined fee was thus €69m.[196]
2. ^ An indeterminate size of the fee was paid via the transfer of Matías Almeyda and Sérgio Conceição.
3. ^ Part of the fees was paid via the transfer of Jonathan Bachini to Parma.
4. ^ An indeterminate size of the fee was paid via the transfer of Diego Simeone to Lazio.
