Box office figures in India are not official, as there is no official source. The following is the highest-grossing Tamil-language films in India.

2009

  • Ayan - The story of a college graduate who becomes a smuggler and the adventures he faces as he tries to outsmart a rival smuggler. This was cinematographer-turned-director K.V. Anand's second film. Distributed by Sun Pictures and produced by AVM Studios, this movie was the biggest blockbuster of the year and the biggest hit of actor Surya's career. Starring Surya, Tamannaah, Prabhu and Karunas.
  • Aadhavan - Another regular commercial entertainer, aimed at families as well as fans of Surya. Directed by K. S. Ravikumar and produced by Udhayanidhi Stalin, the movie tells the tale of an assassin who misses his target for the first time and decides to mingle with his family in order to kill him. This movie was the toast of the Diwali season. Starring Surya, Nayantara, Vadivelu, Saroja Devi, Rahul Dev, Sayaji Shinde and Murali.
  • Kanden Kadhalai - A remake of Hindi blockbuster Jab We Met, this movie tells the story of a dejected youth who meets a girl who is enthusiastic about her life and how they help each other through the thorns of life while falling in love with each other. Directed by R. Kannan and produced by Moserbaer, this movie was distributed by Sun Pictures. The movie is the current hit among the box office films. Starring Bharath, Tamannaah, Santhanam, and Munna.
