Tropical cyclone names may be retired (removed from the name list) in several tropical cyclone basins around the world by the World Meteorological Organization. Usually, this is due to the tropical cyclone so named being a major human disaster.
- List of retired Atlantic hurricane names - North Atlantic Ocean
- List of retired Pacific hurricane names - North Pacific Ocean east of the international dateline
- List of retired Pacific typhoon names - North Pacific Ocean west of the international dateline
- List of retired Philippine typhoon names - Pacific typhoons within the Philippine Area of Responsibility
- List of retired Australian cyclone names - Australian region
- List of retired South Pacific tropical cyclone names - Southern Pacific - East of 160E
A new list is used each season in the southwestern Indian Ocean, so the issue of retired names does not arise. Names in the north Indian Ocean are used once only.
The Pacific hurricane list consists of names removed from two separate naming lists. The Australian region list has names removed from three separate lists, once for each forecasting body. The south Pacific also retired names list has names removed from two different lists, which were used depending on where the tropical cyclone formed. While only one list is officially utilized in the western north Pacific, PAGASA names each tropical cyclone that enters its area of responsibility. Names have also been retired from there.
