The borough has 41 primary schools, of which 15 are church schools. All but a few children are able to start part-time schooling before reaching the age of 5.

The borough has eight state-maintained secondary schools, of which seven are mixed and one (Waldegrave) is for girls only. Christ's School is a Church of England school that sets its own admissions criteria; the other seven schools are Local Authority schools.[5]
