List of holders of the Unofficial Football World Championships

The teams below have held the Unofficial Football World Championships.

The Unofficial Football World Championships (UFWC) (or World Perpetual Football Championship) is an informal way of calculating the world's best football team, using a knock-out title system similar to that used in boxing. Results are traced from the first international match to have a winner, England's victory over Scotland in London on 8 March 1873. The title subsequently is assumed by any team beating the holder in a recognised full international, including wins on penalties where the tournament format uses that method of obtaining results.

Entries in gold indicate that for at least part of the reign, the title holder was also FIFA World Cup holder. Every World Cup winning nation has concurrently held the Unofficial World Championship at least once.

[edit] Footnotes

  1. ^ England were the first winners of an international match, but this was in the second game between that team and Scotland, the first match having been a draw
  2. ^ This remains the longest reign in terms of duration
  3. ^ This reign includes the 100th UFWC match and the first challenge by a non UK team
  4. ^ This period includes the First World War, during which there was no international football
  5. ^ This was the first time that the title had left the UK
  6. ^ Includes first matches at a World Cup finals in which the UFWC was contested
  7. ^ First time the UFWC went to a non-European team
  8. ^ This was the first South American side to take the title
  9. ^ Includes a match in which the score after 90 minutes was Brazil 1- Chile 0, but under the rules of the friendly tournament, this brought about extra time, which finished 1-1. In Nazassi's Baton history, this game is treated as Brazil regaining that title.
  10. ^ The World Cup final of 1958 between Sweden and Brazil was the first match in which both the official and unofficial world championships were disputed.
  11. ^ This victory by Scotland over the then Official World Champions lead to initial jocular claims that Scotland were the unofficial champions, and indirectly to the UWFC
  12. ^ This run includes the 500th UFWC match
  13. ^ Although they have since become members of the AFC, this was the first time that a nation from Oceania had won the title.
  14. ^ FIFA rankings were first published in August 1993
  15. ^ The first Asian holders of the championship. Some sources do not recognise the match by which South Korea won the title as a full international.
  16. ^ The Championship passed to an African nation for the first time, meaning that it has now been held on every occupied continent.
  17. ^ This is the greatest number of games for which the title has been retained in one reign
  18. ^ North Korea's next scheduled match is on 11 March 2012, by which time they will have held the title for 117 days
