The Placenames Database of Ireland is the official database of Irish placenames, known as logainmneacha in Irish.[1]
[edit] Background
Work began on the website in April 2007 between Fiontar, Dublin City University's Irish-medium Teaching & Research Unit,[2] and The Placenames Branch[3] to create a website in Irish and English for those wishing to research Irish placenames.
The running of the website is overseen by An Coimisiún Logainmneacha, Ireland's Placenames Commission.[4] It is designed "for use by journalists and translators, students and teachers, historians and researchers in genealogy. The website is a public resource for Irish people at home and abroad, and for all those who appreciate the rich heritage of Irish placenames."[5]
Some 100,000 placenames are now searchable on the website, with tens of thousands more to be updated as their histories are verified. The website also features voice recordings of some placenames, although it has drawn criticism for using only the Leinster dialect of Irish. As it is the first official database on the pronunciation, origin, and meaning of placenames, it has been widely welcomed.[6][7][8][9][10]
Work began on the first phase of the database in April 2007 and the second phase was launched in October 2008. Phase three is presently underway.[11][dead link]
