Longmont was a turkey growing and processing business founded in 1952 by brothers Leonard and Sidney Strear. It was acquired by ConAgra in 1987. It was acquired by Smithfield Foods in 2006. Employees and other community members fear that the facility will be closed after eliminating over 400 jobs since June 2008, and discontinuing slaugher operations effective 10 November 2008. Butterball's October 30, 2008, sale of the Longmont brand name to Sigma Alimentos, a Mexican firm, further fuels fear and speculation that the Longmont facility will be closed.
