Lough Derg (Loch Dearg in Irish, corruption of Loch Geirg meaning "Geirg's loch") is a small lake in County Donegal, Ireland, about seven kilometres north of the border village of Pettigoe. It is best known for St Patrick's Purgatory, an ascetic pilgrimage to the monastery of Canons Regular on Station Island in the lake.
The lake is about 890 hectares (2200 acres) in size, but is quite shallow, making it dangerous during bad weather.[1] It has stocks of pike, perch and brown trout for angling.
