Loyola School of Jamshedpur was established in 1947 by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), a Roman Catholic religious order founded by St. Ignatius Loyola in 1540. The Jesuit Educational Objectives are to produce men and women who have deep faith in God and in their fellowmen and, imbued with this faith, to work for justice and equality.

The Jesuits have established many schools and colleges in India in which young men and women belonging to every social status, community and linguistic group, are educated through the medium of English and other regional languages. These institutions are a part of the Catholic Church’s efforts to share in the country’s educational undertakings.

The School is owned and run by Loyola Jamshedpur, a registered society which also constitutes the Governing body of the school. The responsibility of the day to day running of the school is vested in the Principal.

As a Catholic school, Loyola has for its inspiration and guidance, the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Special attention is paid to faith formation of the Catholic students, through weekly religion classes, option to attend the Mass when it is celebrated, recollections and the annual retreat. Even so, the school's student profile is very cosmopolitan. Loyola Jamshedpur is one of the most illustrious schools in the Eastern region of India and its alumnus includes internationally well known and respected figures in the fields of art, literature, science, sports, economics, administration and medicine. Luminaries like the modernist dancer Astad Deboo, Delhi Daredevils and Indian Cricketer and ace-paceman Varun Aaron, author and scriptwriter Tuhin Sinha, musician and art critic Adi Gazder, novelist Joydeep Roy Bhattacharya, Dr. Ashok Chatterjee, MIT mathematician Dr. Abhinav Kumar, National Centre for Radioastronomy director Dr. Yashwant Gupta,Tata Steel deputy MD, Souvik Dutta [Harvard Physicist] and UPenn alumnus Niroop Mahanty and many more have passed through the portals of this school. The school which had a long tradition of being only a boys school with the exception of girls studying only in standard 11 and 12; has recently turned coeducational. The school has girls from kindergarten to 8th and in 11th and 12th. In, 2 years time, the whole school will turn co-ed.

Tagged among the top 15 most respectable schools nationwide, by a survey conducted by Education World and IMRB (Indian Market Research Bureau), Loyola School has more than one reason to be looked up to as a pioneer in the sphere of comprehensive education. [1]

[edit] The Loyolean

'The Loyolean is the official newspaper of Loyola School, Jamshedpur. It was first published in the year 1992 by its founding editorial team composed of Deepak Jha as the editor along with Marian Francis, Kavita Guha and the students of the XII Commerce Section in the editorial team. The Loyolean replaced the defunct "Jai Loyola" which had stopped circulation in the early 80's. The Loyolean was started due to the keen interest shown by the students of XII Commerce 1993 batch who were encouraged and supported by the then iconic principal Rev Father Eric Cassel. The newspaper was started under the banner of the Loyola Press Club. Keeping the tradition of having teacher as a Moderator for all club activities, Mrs Leela Ghose was the first moderator of the LPC which published The Loyolean. The LPC was given a room next to the Drum & Bugle Core (DBC) or Band room in the annex where the new primary wing has come up. The XII th Commerce batch continued to print the newspaper for almost 2 years after which it was handed over the Science sections.

Today the LPC, under the able guidance of Mrs. Shamita Ahuja. Its current Editor is Akash Tiwary. not only publishes print issues but also maintains the school portal, www.loyola.edu.in. Previously, the club used to maintain a portal named iLoyolean(defunct). The club has taken the unique initiative of introducing a comic strip, unique to Loyola. The basic purpose of the strip is to give artistic value to a student's life. The strip has a total of seven characters, with various traits that encompass most students.[2]
