[edit] Concept and expansion
MTV Dance originally started out as a night-time programming slot on the now defunct digital music channel MTV Extra.
The strand later expanded to become a standalone music channel broadcast on Sky in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland, where it initially timeshared with Nick Jr. every evening between 19:00 and 06:00.
The sharing of a stream subsequently ended; since August 13, 2002 MTV Dance has broadcast as a 24-hour music channel.
As of Monday 01/08/2011 MTV Dance, MTV Music, MTV Hits, MTV Base, MTV Rocks, MTV Classic, VH1, VIVA and MTV now close down between the hours of 3 and 6am to broadcast teleshopping, ending the era of a 24-hour music channel. They have received criticism due to these channels Pay-tv status.
[edit] Expansion around Europe
On March 7, 2008, MTV Dance increased its presence around Europe, when MTV Networks Europe replaced the Europe-wide feed of MTV Base with a similar feed of MTV Dance.
From January 10, 2011 a feed of the MTV Dance channel launched in Italy on Sky Italia, replacing MTV Pulse.."
[edit] Criticism
The channel has been criticised for airing uptempo-pop music videos. [1]
