The second MTV Europe Music Awards took place at the Le Zénith in Paris. Jean-Paul Gaultier was the host spot and sported no fewer than 15 costume changes. Presenters bearing awards included France's future first lady Carla Bruni as well as Nina Hagen, Zucchero, George Michael, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Jarvis Cocker from Pulp and pop princess Kylie Minogue.

Rock legend David Bowie wowed the crowd with "The Man Who Sold the World" and other performances included East 17, Simply Red, Bon Jovi with "Hey God", The Cranberries with "Zombie" and Blur, who took to the stage with "The Universal".

Highlights of the night included U2's Bono calling the French President Jacque Chirac a "wanker" for nuclear testing.[1]
