The fifth MTV Europe Music Awards took place in Assago, near fashionable Milan,[2] and the show was hosted by former Playboy model, actress and comedian, Jenny McCarthy. The Italian crowd was one of the loudest to date as 3,000 uninvited music fans gate-crashed the arena bringing the surrounding area to a standstill.

The show opened with Faithless and their performance of "God is a DJ". Madonna made her MTV Europe Music Awards debut with "The Power of Good-Bye" and Robbie Williams made his fourth appearance performing "Millenium" / "Let Me Entertain You".

Manic Street Preachers, Busta Rhymes and All Saints also took to the stage. German Rock band Rammstein turned up the heat with a fire-filled performance of their track "Du Hast".

The Spice Girls won Best Group for the second year in a row and the Free Your Mind Award was awarded to Serbian independent radio station, B92.

Presenters from the world of music and fashion included Busta Rhymes, designer duo Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, R.E.M. and Giorgio Armani.
