A SoftMAC network device is a device that requires software to implement MAC Sublayer Management Entity (MLME)[1]

In Linux, the mac80211 subsystem provides capabilities for SoftMAC devices and additional capabilities (such as mesh networking -- known as IEEE 802.11s standard) for devices with limited function.[2]
