The Major League Baseball All-Star Game MVP Award is given to the most outstanding player in each year's Major League Baseball All-Star Game. Awarded each season since 1962, it was originally called the Arch Ward Memorial Award after the man who first came up with the concept of the All-Star game. The name was briefly changed to the Commissioner's Trophy in 1970. In 2002, the trophy was renamed to The Ted Williams Most Valuable Player Award in honor of former Boston Red Sox player Ted Williams, who had died earlier that year. In the first year of the game, fans in attendance, as well as a committee of writers and executives would vote on the game's MVP. Because the game ended in a tie, no winner was named that year, making the Anaheim Angels' Garret Anderson the first recipient of the Ted Williams Award in 2003.
[edit] Notable
Cal Ripken Jr.(1991) and Garrett Anderson(2003) are the only players to win both the Home Run Derby and the All Star Game MVP Award in the same season.
