Malappuram (Malayalam: മലപ്പുറം) is a municipality in the South Indian state of Kerala. It serves as the administrative headquarters of Malappuram district
Malappuram, in malayalam, means 'On top of the hills'.
Malappuram is situated 50 km southeast of Kozhikode and 90 km northwest of Palakkad on the Kozhikode (Calicut) - Chennai road (NH 213). It joins NH 47 in Palakkad.[1]

Malappuram was the headquarters of British troops[citation needed] and later it became the headquarters of the MSP Malabar Special Police.MSP was created by the British in the aftermath widespread violence and bloodshed which during protests by the local Muslims (Mappilas) against the British decision to abolish the Islamic Chaliphate in Turkey ( widely known as Mappila Lahala). The hill country has also contributed much to the cultural heritage of Kerala. It was a famous centre for Hindu-Vedic learning and Islamic philosophy[citation needed].

The district is divided into 6 Taluks (Eranad(Manjeri), Nilambur,Perinthalmanna, Tirur, Ponnani and Tirurangadi).

A major driver of the local economy is the remitances from migrants to the middle eastern countries[citation needed].There is a very strong trader community too.

As of 2001[update] India census,[2] the population of Malappuram is 35,36000(3.53 Million). Males constitute 49% of the population and females 51%. Malappuram has an average literacy rate of 80%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 88.61%, and female literacy is 85.96%.

Malappuram District has two Parliament constituencies viz Ponnani and Malappuram.Both are presently rerpresented by Indian Union Muslim League leaders . Mr E.T. Muhammed Basheer, the former education minister of Kerala is the present parliament member from Ponnani constituency.The central minister E. Ahamed represents Malappuram.[3]

While most of India consider cricket a religion,malappuram has embraced football.Malappuram has contributed fine players to the Kerala and Indian teams[citation needed].

Train: The town is served by Angadipuram railway station (15 km away)
Buses: It is on the Kozhikode-Palakkad NH 213 and well connected.
Airport: Karippur(Kozhikode) is the nearest Airport.

Chaliyar is one of the major rivers of Kerala in North of this District.Chaliyar Agitation under the leadership of K A Rahman is a success story of a Eenvironmental Movement In Kerala —perhaps the only one in the state of Kerala- For the fight against river pollution in this land of rivers continues in other parts of the state.

The temples and the mosques of this district are well-known for their spectacular festivals.
At Kottakkunnu one can see traces of the first fort to be built by the Zamorins of Kozhikode.[4] This scenic table-top location is located at the crest of the Cantonment Hill near the district collectorate.[5]
