As part of the Victorian Regional Fast Rail project, this section of line was converted to single track. Both side platforms still remain in place, but only the former down platform (the one without the station building) still has track next to it. The photograph opposite shows its previous appearance with double track. Malmsbury is the only open railway station on the Bendigo line to have only one platform in use.
Only the 1817 Ex-SCS Swan Hill service stops at Malmsbury; All Echuca services and the majority of Melbourne/Bendigo services stop at this station.

The station is located east of the Daylesford-Malmsbury Road railway bridge.
Taradale and Elphinstone stations are currently not in use and are located between Malmsbury and Castlemaine stations. Chewton railway station has been removed and was also located between Malmsbury and Castlemaine stations. Redesdale Junction railway station has been removed and was located between Kyneton and Malmsbury stations.
