Marília Pêra (born on January 22, 1943 in Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro) is an award-winning Brazilian actress.[1]

Pêra was born to actors Manuel Pêra and Dinorah Marzullo. Her sister is also an accomplished actress Sandra Pêra. She is the mother of actor Ricardo Graça Mello, and actresses Esperança Motta and Nina Morena.[2]
In 1982 she became the first South American ever honored in North America with a Best Actress Prize, for Pixote: A Lei do Mais Fraco, by the National Society of Film Critics Awards.[3] Regarded by the critics[who?] and by the public as the most accomplished and versatile Brazilian actress[citation needed] after Pixote, she's also hailed as "one of the decade's (1980s) ten best actresses" by Pauline Kael.[4]
After Pixote (1981), Bar Esperança (1983) and Tieta do Agreste (1996), she became the most awarded Brazilian actress ever[citation needed].
In 1989 she made public her support to the presidential candidate Fernando Collor de Mello. This led to her being criticized by her fellow actors and accused of "betrayal", with her plays being picketed by activists and her former husband, Nelson Motta, prohibiting her from involving their two children with Collor.[5]
