Maite (pronounced somewhat like "mae-teh") is a female given name of Basque language origin meaning beloved. It has become a popular Spanish name in both Spain and Latin America, where it is usually stressed on the first syllable. It is occasionally spelled with a y instead of i (but see below for the most common meaning of this alternate spelling.)

Alternatively, it is also the Spanish nickname (sort of a contraction) for both María Teresa and María Esther, in which case it is most frequently stressed on the last syllable and spelled with y, thus Mayté.
