A Member of Technical Staff (MTS) is the title for permanent research staff at some institutions and companies. It is roughly equivalent to an assistant professor or associate professor at a university or a chief technical officer (CTO) in a technology startup company.[1]
A Distinguished Member of Technical Staff (DMTS) is roughly equivalent to a full professor (or emeritus professor) at a university or a chief executive officer (CEO) of a technology startup company. The term is especially used at Bell Labs.[1] Other related titles used include:[2]

- Lead Member of Technical Staff (LMTS)
- Senior Member of Technical Staff (SMTS)
- Associate Member of Technical Staff (AMTS)
