The Mercedes-Benz W219 automobiles began production in 2005 (though described as an 04 model). The platform is based on the W211 E-Class. It is sold as the CLS-Class "4-door coupe", although the bodystyle is properly termed a 4-door sedan, albeit with fastback styling.
In 2009, the first testphoto's of the next CLS appeared. On the NAIAS carshow in January 2010, Mercedes-Benz unveiled a sculpture to show the new designwave they will apply to new cars. The structure is said to show the 2011 CLS.

The car has a diesel engine with 165 kW (224 PS; 221 hp) in Europe and three petrol engines:
