Methylene

In chemistry, methylene generally refers to a carbon atom bound to two hydrogen atoms. It may mean:

• Methylene radical or (unsubstituted) carbene, :CH₂
• Methylene group or methylidene, a part of a molecule with formula =CH₂, connected to another atom by a double bond, as in "methylenecyclopropene"
• Methylene bridge or methanediyl, -CH₂-, with the carbon connected to two distinct atoms, as in "methylene dichloride"

Methylene may also be:

• An obsolete name for methanol, CH₃OH.
• "Bichloride of methylene" (30% methanol and 70% chloroform), a variant of the old anesthetic A.C.E. mixture.
