From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sweden has, as of 2009, four Metropolitan Areas. The three largest consists of the surrounding areas around the three largest cities, Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö. Starting 2009 the two cities of Linköping and Norrköping has started a campaign called Fjärde Storstadsregionen[1] (lit. The Fourth Metropolitan Area), or as it is called in English; the Twin Cities of Sweden, in an attempt to promote it as a future fast-growing region.

[edit] Metropolitan Malmö
Greater Malmö (Swedish: Stor-Malmö) is the metropolitan area that includes Malmö, Sweden, and much of its surroundings. The area encompasses the south-eastern part of the Scandinavian Öresund Region. The metropolitan area surrounding the cities of Malmö and Lund in the southern-most part of Sweden are usually denoted as South-Western Scania (Sydvästra Skåne), or more seldom Metropolitan Malmö.
Since the 1970s, improved highways and commuter train connections have meant that commuting area has grown to include Ystad, Skurup, Sjöbo, Eslöv, Höör, Landskrona and Helsingborg. It's not uncommon to live by Malmö and work either in Ystad or Helsingborg, or vice versa. Mentally, however, these towns have kept their allegiance with older divisions of Scania. Inhabitants of Eslöv and Höör consider themselves to live in Central Scania, like Landskrona still is grouped together with Helsingborg rather than Malmö–Lund.

[edit] Twin Cities of Sweden
The The Twin Cities of Sweden consists of the cities of Linköping and Norrköping and surrounding municipalities. The borders of the metropolitan area corresponds to that of Östergötland County. Although the metropolitan area is not very densely built compared to the other three, it is believed that it will continue to grow very much due to the planned Europabanan[5]. This is because of its very strategic position.
