^ Miss Universe was held jointly with Miss USA, and candidates from both pageants were eligible for the Miss Congeniality award from 1952 to 1964.
^ In 1954, Rika Dialina of Greece was unable to enter the United States due to passport problems. Effie Androulakaki was sent to replace her and won the Miss Congeniality award. A few days later, Dialina's visa problems were sorted out and was able to represent Greece in the pageant. As a result of this, Androulakaki withdrew from the competition, turning down the suggestion from pageant officials that she could continue in the contest as "Miss Crete."

This prize was first awarded in 1992 by Catalina until 1993. In 1994-1997 by Jantzen. In 1998-2000 by Oscar de la Renta and in 2001-2002 by Bluepoint. Not awarded since 2003.
In Miss Universe 2008, the title of Best in Bikini-Queen of Vinpearl was given to Elisa Nájera of Mexico during the preliminaries but it's not considered Best in Swimsuit since it wasn't awarded during the live telecast like all the others.
