Diane Nadia Adu-Gyamfi (born 29 October 1991),[citation needed] better known by her stage name Moko, is a British soul singer of Ghanaian descent from New Cross in London.[1] She rose to fame after featuring on the Chase & Status single "Count On Me", which charted at number five in the UK Singles Chart and also appeared with the band on tour. Moko released her debut EP Black on MTA and Virgin EMI on 20 October 2013. She has been compared to UK trip hop bands of the 1990s,[2] with NME describing Moko's music as "London's answer to Massive Attack".[3]

Early life and education[edit]

After learning to sing in her local church[4] and a brief spell with the London Community Gospel Choir,[citation needed] Moko studied English literature at Goldsmiths, University of London,[5] where she met her production collaborators Imposters. Her first live show at Vice Magazine's Birthdays venue, was sold out[6] and she signed to MTA Records (part of Virgin EMI Records) soon after in July 2013.[7]

Music career[edit]

2013–present: Breakthrough[edit]

In May 2013 Moko was asked to perform with Rocket Number Nine and Neneh Cherry on the internet channel Boiler Room TV. This brought her to the attention of Chase & Status who asked Moko to co-write and feature on their single "Count On Me". The single was released on 29 September 2013 and peaked at number five on the UK Singles Chart. During the campaign for this single Moko performed with Chase & Status on BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge and Zane Lowe's Live From Maida Vale. On 7 October 2013, Chase & Status' album Brand New Machine was released. The album features "Count on Me" as well as another collaboration titled "Like That".

In October 2013 Moko released her debut EP Black[8] which features the songs Freeze, Hand On Heart, Summon The Strength and Honey Cocaine. The EP was produced by Moko and longstanding production collaborators Imposters. She performed the EP in its entirety during Chase & Status' Brand New Machine arena tour, as well as her two collaborations.

Her debut single "Your Love", the lead single from her second EP Gold, premiered on MistaJam's BBC Radio 1Xtra show on 2 July 2014.
