[edit] Facilities

Moorabbin is located in a cutting, between Nepean Highway and Station Street, with station access from both.

The station consists of an island layout and side platform, with all three platforms having semi-large steel shelters. A concourse is located above the platforms, housing an enclosed waiting area, ticket facilities and Metcard and myki ticket vending machines. Platforms 1 & 2 are used more than platform 3.

[edit] History

Moorabbin Train Station in 1930 (at upper right)

Moorabbin Station opened on 19 December 1881 as South Brighton, and was renamed Moorabbin in 1907.[1] It was upgraded to a Premium Station in 1998.[2]

In the 1959 the original station was relocated and placed in a deep cutting, coinciding with the construction of road overpasses for both South Road (at the northern end of the station) and Nepean Highway (at the southern end). At that time provision was made for a third platform (on the eastern side of the cutting) and all through services operated through the central platform. The third platform was not used for some twenty-seven years until the completion of the third line in 1986.[3]

In the early 1990s a fire destroyed all shops within the concourse. The concourse was rebuilt and new shops were constructed.
