GIGA is a brand name for several German television shows and, since September 2005, GIGA is also a digital TV channel named GIGA (also used to mark off: GIGA Digital or GIGA TV). The first GIGA show was broadcast on 30 November 1998. The show NBC GIGA was shown first time on the television channel NBC Europe. The show lasted five hours, from 3 pm until 8 pm.

In 2004 the show was renamed from NBC GIGA to GIGA Green. In September 2005 the original show was renamed a second time, now to the simple name GIGA, which caused some confusion because the television channel on which it was broadcast was also named GIGA. The show had been shortened from five hours to three hours, Monday through Friday, and was now being broadcast on the television channel GIGA as well as on the television channel Das Vierte (English: The Fourth).

Then in March 2006, the show GIGA - the original NBC GIGA - was cancelled. The GIGA community was very depressed that the original show had been cancelled while other shows, which were isolated from the original television show in the years after NBC GIGA started, were now running on their own television channel instead.[citation needed] The most popular shows which were still running were GIGA Games, GIGA eSports and PLAY.

[edit] Shutdown

As of January 1 2008 GIGA Digital Television GmbH in Cologne is owned by Premiere (pay television network). On Friday 13 February 2009, the managing director of GIGA, Stephan Borg, announced that Premiere decided to shut down the channel and release all staff. As reasons were mentioned the lack of financial success and bad outlook on the advertising market. In general, Premiere wants to concentrate on its core channels.

The American gaming and entertainment network, IGN Entertainment announced on 20 April the acquisition of the gaming community site GIGA.DE - the online arm of the GIGA television channel. The two companies have had a content partnership since August 2008, and IGN took the opportunity to penetrate the German market. Current plans are to maintain the GIGA.DE trademark and structure.

[edit] GIGA as TV channel

In general today GIGA offers information about games, lifestyle and general themes in the community of GIGA. There were 1.242.424 members in the GIGA community on 24 July 2007. The shows use the Internet so that viewers interact with the producers while the GIGA shows are running. GIGA is broadcast via the European SES Astra satellite system (via Astra 3A at 23.5° east and Astra 1H at 19.2° east). This insures that this television station can be seen all over Europe - which is, of course, mostly relevant for German-speaking countries like Austria, Switzerland, Germany and Liechtenstein.

Since March 2006 the old NBC GIGA was cancelled, while all shows about gaming, GIGA Games and GIGA eSports, remain as a subsidiary of Turtle Entertainment, which is also owner of the ESL. The online stream of the TV station GIGA is: mms://stream.giga.de/GIGA .
