The annual NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship tournament determines the top Men's Field Lacrosse team in the NCAA Division I, Division II, and Division III.

This tournament has determined the national champion since the inaugural 1971 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship. Prior to this, from 1934 through 1970, the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) awarded the Wingate Memorial Trophy to the NCAA Division I annual champion based on regular season records.

The NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship is the most attended NCAA Championship, narrowly outdrawing the Final Four of men's basketball.[1]

The first Division I Championship tournament held in 1971 replaced the USILA and Wingate Memorial Trophy national title awards. Since then, 37 NCAA tournaments have been held. In that span seven teams - Johns Hopkins, Syracuse, Princeton, North Carolina, Virginia, Cornell, and Maryland - have won the national title, with Syracuse leading with ten titles (plus one vacated by the NCAA[a]). The initial tournament in 1971 fielded eight teams, while the most recent tournament fielded 16 teams. In all, 41 teams have participated in the NCAA tournament since its inception. Only two unseeded teams, the 1991 Towson Tigers and the 2006 Massachusetts Minutemen, have made it to the tournament finals, and only three unseeded teams have made it to the tournament semi-finals, the most recent being the Delaware Blue Hens in 2007. Johns Hopkins has appeared in every tournament, except for 1971.

Following the institution of a tournament format for Division I in 1971, the NCAA added a 'small college' tournament for all non-Division I schools for the 1972 and 1973 seasons. In 1974, a combined Division II and III tournament was played through the 1979 seasons. Division II Championship tournaments were played continually through 1981. Following a twelve year interruption, the tournament format was resumed in 1993. Lacking a tournament from 1982 to 1992, several Division II teams received invitations to the Division I tournament, including Adelphi in 1982, C.W. Post in 1986, Adelphi again in 1987 where they upset Army, and Adelphi once more in 1989 where they received a number five seeding.

a Syracuse's participation in the 1990 tournament was vacated by the NCAA Committee due to Infractions. The NCAA Committee on Infractions determined that Paul Gait had played in the 1990 championship while ineligible. Under NCAA rules, Syracuse and Paul Gait’s records for that championship were vacated. [2]
