The National Football League is the largest live spectator sport in the world (excluding auto racing) in terms of average attendance. Despite the recession and rising ticket prices,[1] as of the 2009-10 season the NFL averaged 67,509 live spectators per game, and 17,282,225 total for the season.[2]

Although average attendance is the highest in the world among team sports (excluding auto racing), ticket sales began declining when the U.S. economy went into recession in 2007.[3] The recession, rising ticket prices,[4] competition with other sports, competition with other forms of entertainment like movies, and high television coverage[5] have all been to blame for declining league attendance.
