Information Centre for Health and Social Care
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Information Centre for Health and Social Care (IC) is a special health authority of the National Health Service in England[1].
It was created on 1 April 2005 by a merger of parts of the Department of Health, parts of the NHS Information Authority, and the Prescribing Support Unit.
The IC provides facts and figures to help the NHS and social services run effectively - collecting data from across the sector, analysing it, and converting it into useful information.
Many health related statistics reported in the media will have originated from the IC, for example: statistics relating to drugs misuse, under-age drinking, 'payment by results' and General practitioner salary details.
The IC also provides information - often at short notice - required by Members of Parliament, and their reports are often crucial in forming health policy at all levels from local right up to those made by the Government.
