[edit] History

[edit] ESET NOD32 Antivirus

NOD32 was created in the early 1990s when computer viruses were becoming increasingly prevalent.

Initially the program gained popularity with IT workers in Eastern European countries, as ESET was based in Slovakia. Though the program's abbreviation was originally pronounced as individual letters, recent worldwide use of the program has led to the more common single-word pronunciation, sounding like the English word nod.[2] The company reached its 4000th update to virus definitions on April 10, 2009.

The acronym NOD stands for "Nemocnica na Okraji Disku" (hospital at the edge of the disk), a pun related to the Czechoslovakian medical drama series Nemocnica na okraji mesta (hospital at the edge of the city).

[edit] ESET Smart Security

On November 5, 2007, ESET released an Internet security suite, ESET Smart Security, to compete with other security suites by other companies such as McAfee, Symantec, AVG and Kaspersky. ESET Smart Security incorporates anti-spam and a bidirectional firewall along with traditional anti-malware features of ESET NOD32 Antivirus.

[edit] ESET SysInspector

ESET SysInspector is a diagnostic tool which allows in depth analysis of various aspects of the operating system, including running processes, registry content, startup items and network connections. Anti-Stealth Technology is used to discover hidden objects (rootkits) in the Master Boot Record, boot sector, registry entries, drivers, services and processes. SysInspector Logs are standard XML files and can be submitted to IT experts for further analysis. Two logs can be compared to find a set of items not common to both logs.

ESET Mobile Antivirus

[edit] ESET Remote Administrator

ESET Remote Administrator is a central management console designed to allow network administrators to manage ESET software across a corporate network.

[edit] ESET Mobile Antivirus for Windows Mobile

ESET Mobile Antivirus is aimed at protecting Windows Mobile Smartphones from viruses, spyware, adware, trojans, worms, rootkits, and other unwanted software. It also provides antispam filtering for SMS messages.

[edit] Other Programs

ESET has released free standalone removers for malware when they are widespread, such as Mebroot[3] and Conficker[4].

[edit] ESET Smart Security 4.0

[edit] Beta 1

On November 18, 2008, ESET Smart Security 4.0 Beta 1 was released for limited public testing. ESET claims that version 4.0 includes improvement in detection and cleaning; the integration of ESET SysInspector, ESET SysRescue, Mozilla Thunderbird; Windows Live Mail support; and a self-defense module. For version 4.0 ESET developed a new wizard for creating a Bootable CD and USB key. After installing the Microsoft Windows Automated Installation Kit v1.1, the wizard creates an ISO image Live CD with installed Anti-virus and allows burning it on CD or copying it on a USB mass storage device. Users can boot the computer from this recovery medium, scan and clean the infected system, and afterwards reboot a clean system. [5]

[edit] Release Candidate

On February 18, 2009, ESET Smart Security 4.0 Release Candidate 1 was released. It contains additional support for Windows 2000, Windows Live Mail, an update to its firewall module and other fixes. [6]

[edit] Full Release

On March 2, 2009, ESET released the full product for purchase or upgrade. The full program can be downloaded, as a trial, at one of the official ESET download sites. There were compatibility problems between Windows Vista SP2 and version 4 of its Smart Security and Antivirus products. However, this was remedied by an update. [7]

[edit] ESET Mobile Antivirus for Symbian

In March, 2009 at CeBIT in Hannover, Germany, ESET demonstrated a preliminary version of ESET Mobile Antivirus for Symbian. [8]

[edit] Technical information

NOD32 is written largely in assembly code,[9] which supposedly contributes to its low use of system resources and high scanning speed.

On a network, NOD32 clients can update from a central "mirror server" on the network.

[edit] Reception

  • NOD32 was certified by ICSA Labs.[10]
  • It has been tested 54 times by Virus Bulletin with a success rate of 96%,[11] the highest pass rate of the tested anti-virus products.[12]
  • It was rated 5 stars out of 6 by PC Pro Magazine and received their "recommended" award. [13]
  • At CNet.com it has received a score of 4.5/5 by editors[14]
  • 94.4% Malware Detection and 94.7% spyware detection in the latest AV-Test comparative [15]
  • 93% Detection on Set A and 96.6% Detection on Set B with most aggressive settings in the latest AV-Comparatives Test[16]
