[edit] History
In 1950 Nan'ao Island was the scene of a battle (Battle of Nan'ao Island) fought between the nationalists and the communists during the Chinese Civil War. A smaller battle (Battle of Nanpēng Archipelago) was fought in 1952 on the nearby Nanpeng islands.
An important Ming-era shipwreck, nicknamed Nan'ao One, was recently excavated off Nan'ao Island.[1]
