National Institute Of Technology Sikkim (NIT Sikkim or NITSKM) is an Institute of National Importance in Sikkim state of India. It is one of the 30 National Institutes of Technology in India. And is one among the ten new NITs [2] established by the Ministry Of Human Resources Development, Govt. of India .


National Institute of Technology, Sikkim is one among the ten newly established NITs by the Government of India under the 11th Five year Plan, 2009.[3] NIT Sikkim started functioning in August, 2010.

Currently it is being operated from temporary campus at the Barfung Block, Ravangla Sub Division of South Sikkim. It is likely to continue its activities at Ravangla Campus till its permanent campus comes up at Khamdong, Sikkim.[4] It is managed by the NIT Sikkim Society registered under the Societies Act.


All courses and examinations are conducted in English language as the only mode of instruction. NIT Sikkim offers a 4-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) programme in four engineering fields. Admission to these programmes is taken through the National level engineering entrance examination - JEE (MAINS). Prior to JEE (MAINS),Students were admitted through AIEEE.


NIT Sikkim started admitting students for the academic session 2010-11 with an intake of 30 students in each of the following branches of Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) programmes:

NIT Sikkim is to avail Mechanical Engineering as a new branch for the academic session 2014-15.

Admissions to the B. Tech program in the Institute are based on JEE(Main)(replacing AIEEE) conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and through the counseling conducted by the Central Counseling Board (CCB).

Campus facilities[edit]

Currently it is operating from a temporary campus at Ravangla. Its temporary campus still provides lots of facilities to its students.


The institute has a central library which caters to all the academic needs of students. The library also subscribes to a number of scientific journals and magazines.

Internet accessibility[edit]

The academic buildings are all Wi-Fi enabled. Computer labs are also connected to the internet through high speed LAN.Many hostels are provided with internet facility and other hostels will also be provided in near future.


An Auditorium is inside the campus for important occasions and cultural events.


The Institute provides boarding facilities to the students and the faculty members, on the campus. The Institute provides separate hostels for the male and female students with separate mess facilities.


The Institute has a playground with facilities for playing cricket, football etc. It also has facilities to play badminton ,table tennis etc. The institution also hosts a number of intra-sports tournaments for its students which are handled by the student body of NIT Sikkim.

  • Xplode Cricket Cup is the annual intra-cricket tournament.
  • Sangharsh'. is the annual chess tournament .

and there are many more.

Technical And Cultural Activities[edit]

"UDGAM" is the Annual Cultural Fest organised by the Student body of the Institute.[5]

The Electronics and Communication Department has its unique tech-society, ANUVRAT which organizes the most exciting technical events and quizzes round the year.
