The Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine is the largest library of Ukraine, and the main scientific information center of the state. It is ranked among the top ten national libraries of the world. Founded 2 (15) in August 1918 as the National Library of Ukrainian state in 1988 is named after VI Vernadsky.

Overview[edit]

The volume of funds is currently about 16 million units. This is a unique collection of sources including books, magazines,'s continued publications, maps, music, visual materials, manuscripts, printed books, newspapers, documents on non-traditional media. The library has the most complete collection of monuments in the state of Slavic literature and manuscripts, archives and book collections of prominent figures of Ukrainian and world science and culture. Components of funds - Library and Archives Collection "Foundation President of Ukraine" archival copy of printed Ukraine since 1917, Archival Fund of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Each year, the funds received 160-180 thousand documents (books, magazines, newspapers, etc.). The library is equipped with all Ukrainian publications, receives a copy of theses, which are protected in the territory of Ukraine, is an international book exchange with over 1.5 thousand academic institutions and libraries 80 countries. To the library as a depository of documents and records of the United Nations in Ukraine sent the publication of this organization and its specialized agencies. Since 1998, the fund is made purposeful shaping of electronic documents.

The Network Information Resources Library includes the collection "Scientific Periodicals Ukraine" (0.5 million articles from 1.7 thousand magazines), electronic texts (documents 80 thousand and 60 thousand dissertation abstracts) analyzes (4 th ballots timely information and analytical reviews) catalogs and card indexes (3.5 million bibliographic records and 5 million card pictures general alphabetical catalog); abstracts database "Ukrainika science" (400 thousand records). In an Intranet environment there is 700 thousand publications.

Search: The Library incorporates a system of library catalogs, card indexes, and fund bibliographic editions with a volume of 200 thousand copies. This foundation includes normative documents (laws, decrees, regulations, etc.), encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks, and bibliographic aids. The system library directories and files form a general alphabetical catalog, readers can find alphabetical and systematic catalogs and over 30 sub directories and files library.

Versatile resources: The library uses about 500 thousand readers, which is published annually to 5 million documents. Daily library visits average about 1-2 thousand scholars, professionals and students. Their information service is in 16 sectors and specialized rooms, the main library complex, and in 6 halls affiliates, which contains the largest collection of newspapers in Ukraine, private manuscripts, early printed books, and rare books, prints and reproductions, printed music, a collection of Judaica and significant archival fonds of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The internet portal is visited daily, with 40-50 thousand users. A special category of customers includes the information services of public authorities, including the Parliament of Ukraine, Administration of the President of Ukraine, and the Cabinet of the Ministers of Ukraine.

The library has a research institution in the field of research and information, library science and related sciences. It offers a post-graduate and specialized counsel in the defense of doctoral theses, holds annual international conferences, publishes a scientific, theoretical and practical journal called "Library Bulletin" along with several collections of scientific works, including "the Library natsyonalnыh Academies of Science: Problems of Functioning, Trends of development", " Proceedings of the National Library of Ukraine named after VI Vernadsky, "" Manuscripts and book heritage of Ukraine "," Ukrainian biographical "," Ukrainian-Macedonian scientific journals. Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine was established on the 15th of August 1918 by Hetman Pavlo Skoropadskyi as the "National Library of the Ukrainian State" (Natsionalna biblioteka Ukrayinskoyi Derzhavy). On the 5th of September 1918 the Provisional Committee on creation of the National Library headed by Vladimir Vernadsky (Volodymyr Vernadsky) was established.

Scientific Activity[edit]

The Library performs all of the functions of the principal library in the country of Ukraine and as a complex cultural centre of scientific information and scientific research. It works on problems of bibliography, biography and book sciences, scientific descriptions of manuscripts and old-printed books, and the preservation, restoration and conservation of documents.

Research activities Vernadsky National Library

Since 1971 the National Library of Ukraine Vernadsky has held the status of a research institution and explores the problem of library science, bibliography, book science, sourcing, documentation, archiving, biographical work, kodykolohiyi kodykohrafiyi, the history of book culture, science, social communications, conservation, conservation and restoration of documents; methodologies, techniques, and creation of a national bibliography of Ukraine, full bibliographies documenting minorities of Ukraine; the formation and preservation of the national library fund of Ukraine; improvement of library-bibliographic classification, cataloging; and the development of computer technology information and library activities.

The main research areas of the library are:

Vernadsky National Library, in its theoretical, methodological and practical achievements, is the parent organization for the implementation of the project to create a national bibliography of Ukraine and consistently performs multi-volume edition of pointers on national bibliographic repertoire, which Ukraine had little in its history, creates a bibliographic database.

The library occupies the leading place in the research and writing books heritage of Ukraine, creating archaeographic registers Manuscript, library collections and historical collections. Their implementation becomes the basis for the creation of the State Register of book monuments as part of the national register of cultural heritage and UNESCO 'Memory of the World ".

On the basis of historical and archival research of dokumentoznavchyh, the Ukrainian Heritage of Library Science creates a broad scientific knowledge base on the history of the National Academy of Sciences and the generated database of Archival Fund published collections of documents and records, directories, guides, collective monograph.

The library serves as a national center of biographical research: it develops the theoretical and scientific-methodological problems of Ukrainian biographical studies, works on the formation of databases of biographical information, coordinates research on a national scale, is in charge of the collection and publication of materials and biographies of leaders of Ukraine, almanacs, directories, and electronic resources provide the Ukrainian biographical dictionary. Electronic scientific information resources are in the "Ukrainian national biographical archive."

Vernadsky National Library has made substantial achievements in the study of issues related to library collection. Including active development of modern technologies of conservation and restoration of books and manuscripts, environmental monitoring libraries, digitization and creation of an insurance fund of unique publications, studies into the physical and chemical parameters of paper and materials used for restoration and bookbinding, and the development and application of scientific recommendations on ensuring the long-term preservation of the documentary heritage of Ukraine.

Scientific achievements: librarians are published in international and national scientific conferences, meetings, seminars, readings, and also published in scientific journals and books. The Vernadsky National Library issued the following professional periodicals:

Holdings[edit]

The collection of the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine contains more than 15 million items. Its basis forms a large part of the book collections of the 18th-19th centuries.

As a depository library the Library has systematic acquisition. Annually, it receives 160.000-180.000 documents (books, magazines, newspapers, etc.). Holdings include all Ukrainian publications and copies of all Ukrainian candidate and doctoral theses. The library exchanges materials with more than 1.500 research and academic institutions and libraries from 80 countries. As a United Nations depository library since 1964, the library receives all English and Russian language publications from the United Nations and its special institutions.[4]

The holdings of the Vernadsky National Library include large collections of manuscripts,[5] rare printed books and incunabula. The library has the most complete collection of Slavic writing, including the Peresopnytsia Gospels, one of the most intricate surviving East Slavic manuscripts.

Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine is the world’s foremost repository of Jewish folk music recorded on Edison wax cylinders. Their Collection of Jewish Musical Folklore (1912-1947) was inscribed on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register in 2005.[6]

Using the Library[edit]

Materials may be searched through print and through the online library catalogs, card indexes, and reference databases. Materials from 1994 to present are included in the electronic card catalog. There are more than 30 department print card catalogs arranged by subject and classification.

Each year, about 500.000 readers use the library resources and receive 5 million documents. Each day, about 1.800-2.000 scientists, specialists, post-graduate students, and students visit the library. The readers are served in 16 specialized reading rooms of the main library complex, and 6 reading rooms at the branch site that houses collections of manuscripts, incunabula and rare books, prints and reproductions, music editions, Jewish manuscripts and printed editions, the largest newspaper collection in Ukraine, and the archives of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

The library serves governmental bodies such as Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) of Ukraine, the President’s administration and Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine. For these bodies, the library provides not only traditional library services, but also prepares reviews and analytical materials.

The library serves as a research institute in the fields of library science, bibliographical sciences, book sciences and information technologies. The library publishes the magazine Library News and annually hosts international scientific conferences.

It has more than 390 computers in use for creating the National Electronic Library of Ukraine and to serve readers by providing electronic information resources.

The library has more than 40 departments, grouped by fields (such as library sciences, Ukrainian books, manuscripts, archived sciences, bibliographical research) and centers (such as preservation and restoration, culture and education, computer technologies, and publishing). The library has about 900 employees (70% librarians, 17% scientists, 13% auxiliary staff).

Collections[edit]

The library owns works related to the history and culture of the Ukraine and surrounding regions, including the some of the oldest and rarest documents in the country, including the only handwritten music composition in existence by Artemiĭ Vedelʹ.[8]

Orsha Gospel[edit]

The library holds the Orsha Gospel. The book, which dates back to the late 13th century, is one of the oldest Belaurisian and one of the oldest to depict Cyrillic script. The book was thrown away by a monastery in Orsha. It was found by Napoleon's troops in 1812. In 1874 it was donated to the Kiev Theological Academy. It now resides in the collection of the National Library. It has miniature brightly colored illuminations of Saint Luke and Saint Matthew. They are in the Palaeologian dynasty style. Over 300 illustrations of flowers and animals are found in the book. It consists of the Gospel, a menology, and ends with matutinal gospels.[9]

Aeneid[edit]

Ivan Kotliarevsky's epic poem version of the Aeneid, by Virgil, is the first piece of literature written in common Ukrainian. It was also the first book to discuss the cultural and history of the Ukraine. The library holds five first edition copies.[10]
