Life and career
Mariano started learning chess at the age of two, taught by his father Nelson O. Mariano. His older brother Nelson Mariano II is an International Grandmaster, sister Cristine Rose Mariano is a Woman International Master, and Carmina Joy Mariano are all well known chess prodigies in the Philippines.
At the age of four, he was already competing in adult level competition known as Shell National Active Chess Championship in 1994. He won an award as the "Youngest Player" to compete. When "Elo" turned six "Primary 1" Elementary school, Mariano studied in Adamson University (ADU) and already appointed as an athlete and chess player of the university. He was the representative for three years of the university on various school competitions in the Philippines which is the "PALARONG PAMBANSA".
At the age of ten "Elo" transferred to Padre Mariano Gomez Elementary School for Primary 4, then for primary 5 he transferred again to University of the East which is his alma mater in the present. At the age of twelve, he already have his first international exposure in the World Youth Age Group Championship coached by GM Eugenio Torre held in Greece Heraklion and Crete after winning the National Youth Age-Group Championship in the Philippines on 2002 one of the delegation to represent the Philippines is GM Wesley So. After playing in Greece Mariano was invited by the Pilipino Community in Dubai to play on a Dubai Junior International Open Tournament. He finishes 4th place on under 14 open category after losing in the penultimate round from Woman Grandmaster (WGM) Lara Stock and winning the last round.
On his run in the Secondary school he won the junior division’s Athlete of the Year Award UAAP Season 67 and UAAP Season 68, twice in a row and trice for the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in UAAP Season 67, UAAP Season 68, and UAAP Season 69. On his college level at the age of seventeen he grab the Rookie of the Year award on UAAP Season 70 and he became the grand finals champion in the prestigious tournament in the Philippines the "Shell National Rapid Chess Championship" Juniors Division. He won the 2011 Bangkok Blitz Open.
