"Neo-theocracy" (often shortened to "neo-theo") is a neologism political commentators[citation needed] began using in the first decade of the 21st century to refer to an alleged world-wide growth in the popularity of the acceptance of the legitimacy of the combination of religion and politics, considered to be a threat to the principle of the separation of religion and state.
